When I lived in Franz Josef one of my favorite things to do was take the 25 minute drive to the tiny hidden sea side community (35 people) of Okarito. Whenever I’d stay out there over night I would wake up never knowing where the hell I was because the glorious sound of the raging ocean always confused me.
Okarito is home to odd characters. They are protective of their little commune and if you accidentally stumbled upon this place you might mistake it as a haven for carnival folk. But its appeal is as clear as the local moonshine. It is an artistic vision of paradise.
