Well autumn is in full swing in New Zealand now and I am somewhat happy to see it come. Crappalvania is most beautiful this time of year as the foliage produces remarkable degrees of reds, yellows, oranges, greens and gold. I run around the village with my camera and a crazed look and give the local jabber jaws something to blabber on about as I try to capture all of it on film.
The temperature drops sharply and quickly this time of year. One day it was 28 degrees the next it was 15 and it hasn’t been above 18 since. I don’t tend to feel the cold as much as others and this could be because I am naturally insulated like a polar bear or because I don’t dress like its summer then wonder why I can’t feel the tip of my nose.
The hostel has two great methods of heating, one is under floor heating the other is a wood fireplace. The latter one having claimed many layers of my skin while I expertly placed wood into the hot raging fire everyday last winter.
I find the hostel to be warm, sometimes too warm. Over last winter Mr. Crappenstein would occasionally forget to turn off the under floor heating at night and by the next morning we had slightly crispy, grumpy guests complaining about how hot it was. The hostel is well insulated (unlike The Crap House) and retains heat well. Still, we get complaints from people about how cold they are. They walk around with their jackets and knit caps on, groping a cup of tea like it was a lover and commenting to anyone who will listen about how cold they are. We can provide extra blankets and duvets to anyone who is cold hearted enough to actually be chilly and I have even offered to come into their room at night and spoon them for extra warmth. No takers yet. Darn.
